Obituary of Charles F. Andrew
Please share a memory of Charles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Charles Fleming Andrew died at home in Darien on March 1 after a long battle with cancer. He was the son of Edwin Lee Andrew and Florence Fleming Andrew. He was born in Covington, Kentucky, and grew up in Mansfield, Ohio; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Rome, New York; and Shaker Heights, Ohio. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Harvard College (1941) and his master's degree from Harvard Business School (1943). During World War II, he served in the United States Navy as a lieutenant and was stationed on Guam. An economist, he spent most of his career associated with the oil industry, working for companies such as Standard Oil of Ohio and United Carbon; he later served as an analyst and writer for John S. Herold, Inc, a research and consulting company specializing in the energy sector, where he retired as a Senior Vice President in 1989. He returned in 1995 as Vice President of Recruiting and continued to work up until December 2007 as a mentor and advisor to the management team at John S. Herold, Inc.
A Darien resident since 1971, Charles was active in the community. In the town government, he served on the Board of Education and was instrumental in planning a renovation of the high school. Over the years, he was reelected many times to the Darien Representative Town Meeting, participating in public works and other committees. In addition, he was a member of St. Luke's Parish, where he sang in the choir for many years. Charles volunteered with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program in Darien and was an active member of the Darien Senior Men's Association, including serving as its President in 1997. Other associations include membership in the Darien League of Women Voters, the Harvard Clubs of New York City and Fairfield County, and the Silvermine Golf Club.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Evelyn Ehrich Andrew of Darien; his two daughters Alison Lee Andrew of Guilford, Connecticut, and Alisa Andrew of Newtown, Connecticut; and her husband Robert T. Neal, also of Newtown. Charles is also survived by a sister, Elizabeth Lee 'Blee' Horton of Harpswell, Maine, and several nieces and nephews. His sister Jane Andrew Clark predeceased him.
Charles will be remembered as an avid reader, often juggling several books simultaneously, and a lifelong student of music; his knowledge of jazz and classical music was formidable. Charles could usually be found listening to the Metropolitan Opera on Saturday afternoons. He sang throughout his life: with a high school a capella group, the Harvard Glee Club, church choirs, and the Darien Senior Men's Association. He also sang with the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus under director Robert Shaw.
Memorial services will be held at St. Luke's Parish, 1864 Post Road, Darien, on Saturday March 8 at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 372 Danbury Road, Wilton, CT 06897.
