Obituary of Axel Edward Ohrn

July 6th, 2009 Axel Edward Ohrn was bon July 20, 1911 in Ramnas, Sweden. He was the son of Elin Elisabet Norman Ohrn and Edward Albin Ohrn and is survived by his only sibling, Arne G. Ohrn, currently living in Darien with his wife Irene. He met his lifelong sweetheart, Linnea F.K. Mattsson at a Swedish dance, and they were married on October 4, 1934 in Rye, NY. In 1941 they purchased their home in Darien and had an extremely happy marriage for over 64 years and both enjoyed music, dancing, their family and friends and the beautiful garden and flowers he raised in his yard. He brought huge bouquets of flowers every Sunday since1941, from early spring until fall, to his beloved Mormon church for the entire congregation to enjoy. He immigrated to the United States from Sweden at age 13 through Ellis Island. It was very cold and the sea voyage was very dangerous because of severe wintry weather. He was very homesick for his beautiful Sweden. But he quickly made many life long friends in his new homeland. He faced many difficult times during the Great Depression and 2nd World War. He was a very kind and hardworking man; loved to read and write letters; kept amazing journals and was always of good cheer. He was proud of his family and expressed his love and pride often. He was a long time member of Vasa 3 Crowns Lodge (Swedish Club), where he met his future wife, Linnea. He worked for many years in the Electrical construction field, supervising many major projects including Bloomingdales, Cross County Shopping Center and many others. He was recently honored by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers' Union for 80 years of membership. He was past president of the local AARP chapter. He was also active for many years in the 60 Plus Club and Senior Center. He sang with the Senior Men and the local Latter Day Saint Ward Choir. He was also selected to participate in the dedicatory choir of the Mormon Temple in Washington, DC in 1974. He has a lovely bass voice until recently! He also played the accordion and his children and grandchildren loved to sing with him at holiday gatherings. He will be greatly missed by all his family and many friends. In addition to many nieces and nephews, he leaves behind his daughter, Barbara L. Taylor of Darien; son Frederic A. Ohrn and daughter-in-law, Lynne Leonard Ohrn of New Canaan, as well as grandchildren; Desiree' Barlow, Jessica Horton, Michael Taylor, Amanda Cunningham, Winston Ohrn, Melinda Radmacher and Alex Ohrn and 20 much loved great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock on Monday morning, July 13th at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 682 South Avenue, New Canaan, CT, preceded by a viewing at 10 AM.
