Obituary of Leonard John Hutter

Leonard John Hutter, a former 10 year resident of Darien and a former longtime resident of Pittsburgh, PA, died peacefully Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at Long Ridge of Stamford. Mr. Hutter, 96, was the beloved husband of the late Edith Hansen Hutter.
Leonard was born January 8, 1913 in Coraopolis, PA to the late Henry Hutter and Mary Alice Doohan. The son of an Austrian immigrant and one of seven children, Leonard put himself through the University of Pittsburgh's Structural Engineering program where he graduated in 1934 during the height of the Great Depression.
His professional career spanned 40 years as an engineer with Pittsburgh Des Moines Steel in Pittsburgh, PA. He was involved in the structural design of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis and in the remediation of a water tank collapse in Brazil.
Leonard met his future wife at Fort Wright, Fishers Island, NY, while serving in the Army during World War II. He was an Anti-aircraft Captain and instructor and received American Theater and American Defense Ribbons and a Victory Medal. He retired from Active Duty in 1959 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Leonard enjoyed bridge, bowling, church, crossword puzzles as well as reading. He was a devoted husband and father and a man of tremendous integrity. He played bridge and continued to drive his car into his 90s. He was previously President of an AARP chapter in Pittsburgh and the Parent Teachers' Association of St. Cyril's of Alexandria in Pittsburgh.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Hutter was pre-deceased by a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Chuck Yocum. He is survived by three children and their spouses, Judith and John Swez of Terre Haute, IN; Donald and Maria Hutter of Flagstaff, AZ; and James and Audrey Hutter of Darien, CT. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Visitation hours will be held at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien on Thursday, April 30, 2009 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM and Friday, May 1, 2009 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. A memorial service will be held at Noroton Presbyterian Church, 2011 Post Road, Darien on Friday, May 1, 2009 at 3:30 PM. There will be a graveside service at Allegheny County Memorial Park on Monday, May 4, 2009 in Allison Park, PA.
