Obituary of Arthur Winfred Rhodes

Arthur Winfred "Dusty" Rhodes, 91, of Darien, CT, died Thursday, December 18, at Stamford Hospital after a short illness.
Dusty was born in Greenbrier, TN, to Lillian Alice Guthrie Rhodes and Arthur Belle Rhodes. He was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy (1940) and of New York University (1961). In 1940, Dusty was stationed with the Pacific fleet aboard the U.S.S. Maryland and survived the attack on Pearl Harbor in December, 1941.
In 1946 in South Charleston, WV, he began work as design engineer for Union Carbide Corporation, and in 1957 he was transferred to the company's Manhattan headquarters as management consultant and moved to Darien. From 1964 to 1966 he lived with his family near London on assignment to the company's operations in England, Sweden and Scotland, then returned to Darien and to Union Carbide's domestic operations, where he worked until his retirement.
Dusty was a member of the First Congregational Church of Darien (UCC) for 47 years, and he served that church in many leadership roles. From 1979 to 1982, he was District IV representative to the Darien Representative Town Meeting. Dusty's interests included sailing, skiing, dancing, poetry, photography, travel, home-improvement projects and helping others in any way he could. He delivered Meals on Wheels to shut-ins for many years and was a longtime member of Darien Senior Men's Association.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Anne R. Nash Rhodes of Darien; daughters Mary Tipton Rhodes Grunwald of Berlin, Germany and Lillian Louise Rhodes of Hebron, CT; sons Dr. Charles Edward Rhodes of Phoenix, AZ and Ross Alan Rhodes of Canton, OH; step-daughters and stepsons Georgia Nash of Darien, Douglas Nash of Port Townsend, WA and Daniel Nash of Stillwell, KS; seven grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Dusty was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Tipton Ross Rhodes of Caruthersville, MO; a son, Arthur Winfred Rhodes, Jr.; and a granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Darien, 14 Brookside Road, on Tuesday, December 23, at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the First Congregational Church of Darien, CT.
