Obituary of Susan Anne Spielman

Susan Anne Spielman, age 61, died September 9, 2008 in Stamford Hospital following a sudden heart attack. She passed peacefully surrounded by her loving family. Susan was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on March 23, 1947 to the late James W. and Evelyn Miron. Susan was also predeceased by her brother Paul Miron and her sister Diane Bennett. She was the adoring bride of Peter Spielman of Darien, CT for almost 40 years and will be sorely missed by him. Susan was the devoted mother of David (and wife Kelly) of Hamden, CT and James (and wife Samantha) of Norwalk, CT. She was the beloved aunt of Michael Bennett (and his wife Susan) of Glen Williams, ON and loving sister-in-law to Bob Bennett of Mississauga, ON. Susan grew up in Toronto and moved to Montreal where she met and married her husband, Peter. Together they moved to Toronto and then to Markham, ON before settling in Darien in 1982. She was a dedicated hockey Mom, long before it was popular. She was also a great team manager, and was proud of her role as one of the co-conveners of the Markham Youth Hockey Tournament, then the largest in the world. Her personal interests varied widely. Susan's religious life was ecumenical as she enjoyed services at St John's, St Thomas More and Noroton Presbyterian Church. She was a talented artist who sold her charcoals of dogs and wolves commercially for a time. She was a gourmet cook who passed on her love of cooking to her son David now an accomplished chef. She volunteered with the Darien Chapter of the American Red Cross following Hurricane Katrina. Susan passed on this compassionate nature and her caring love of animals to her son James. She enjoyed picnics at Darien Beach and strolls around Cove Beach following Peter's retirement. And, although she dearly loved her Canadian roots, she was proud to also become an American in 2007. In so many ways Susan personified love and kindness. Her generous spirit will be dearly missed by all who knew her. A wake will be held at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien on Friday, September 12th, 2008 from 5 8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John's Roman Catholic Church, 1986 Post Rd, Darien at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 13, 2008. Burial will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien.
