William H. Staples, a resident of Wallingford, CT and a former 81 year resident of Stamford, CT, passed away on Monday, September 8, 2008 at the Masonic Health Care Center in Wallingford. Born in 1916 in Stamford, he was the son of the late Henry and Mildred (Fox) Staples. He was 91. William graduated from Stamford High School in 1934. He worked for the Stamford Water Company from 1940 to 1971 and retired as supervisor of Meter Department. He was the Turn of River Community Baseball League batting champion in 1936 with a .429 average. From 1937 to 1938, he played with Tarboro, North Carolina of the Piedmont League. William was a member of the Stamford Chapter Glee Clubs of America. He sang at the Testimonial Concert in honor of Christopher Mollen Hauer, Grand Master Mason, State of New York at the 71st Regimental Armory in New York City in April 1934. William was a Master Mason with Union Lodge #5 in Stamford, CT, a 32 Degree Mason, a member Scottish Rite, Pyramid Temple Shrine, and Director Staff. He was a Scout Master with Troop 24 in Stamford. William is survived by one son, William F. Staples of Hartford, CT. He is predeceased by his wife, Jane Smith Close Staples and one brother, Frederick G. Staples. Friends may call at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien on Thursday, September 11, 2008 from 10:30 to 11:30 AM. A Graveside Service will follow at Fairfield Memorial Park, Stamford at 12:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Shriners Hospitals for Children, Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
