Obituary of Fred L. Voelker

Fred L. Voelker, a long time resident of Darien, CT, died on Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at Stamford Hospital. Born in 1916 in Bloomfield, NJ, he was the son of the late John Voelker and Clara Tompkins Van Sciver. He was 92. Fred served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, enlisting right after the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. He served in Panama with the Ordnance Division as a Staff Sergeant. He worked as an electrician and was a member of IBEW Local 208 for 61 years. He was a life member of the Darien Fire Department and a life member of the South Norwalk Boat Club. He was an avid boat enthusiast, spending time with family and friends along Long Island Sound. Fred started as a teenager playing drums with his family and later was a drummer in Culver Griffin's Square Dance Band as well as Jazz and Dixie Land bands for over 60 years. Fred is survived by his three daughters, Sherry Giangrasso of Oakdale, CT; Lynn Voelker of Darien; Joan Nickel of Beacon Falls, CT and five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He is also survived by two step-brothers, Herbert Van Sciver and Arthur Van Sciver, Sr. both of Darien and many nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by his wife Edna in 2002 and a brother William Van Sciver. A private graveside service will be held at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien.
