Obituary of Robert L. Biewen

Robert L. Biewen, 71, died at Norwalk Hospital on June 23rd, after a courageous five year battle with lung cancer. Bob was a 40 year resident of Rowayton, CT. Born to Wellington and Madonna Biewen in Austin, MN, Bob spent the majority of his rewarding and challenging professional career on the east coast in publishing. His career included positions at Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Springer Verlag, McGraw Hill and HarperCollins; retiring proudly as the Chairman of the Scientific American College Publishing Group. Bob was known as a tenacious and thoughtful leader who inspired excellence and championed people and their ideas.
An avid skier, sailor, golfer and gardener, Bob loved nature and the beauty of the outdoors. In his commitment to service and leadership Bob served as City Councilman of Norwalk and volunteered on the board of a nonprofit organization dedicated to treating substance abuse.
Bob is survived by all who love him including his wife, Nancy Biewen; his daughters, Jennifer Grant and her husband, Michael, Mary Hickey and her husband, Bill; brothers, Eugene Biewen and William Biewen; brother-in-law Jack Griff and grandchildren, Megan, Michael and Cooper.
Bob will be remembered as an intelligent, generous and loving husband, father and friend who lived life with wonder and grace. The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Richard Frank, Linda Versea, RN and the staff at the Whittingham Cancer Center.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at the United Church of Rowayton, 210 Rowayton Avenue, Rowayton on Thursday, June 26th at 10:00 AM. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, June 25th from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien.
