Obituary of Virginia Larine (Jean) Hayner Improta

Virginia Larine (Jean) Hayner Improta, a long time resident of Darien, passed away on Sunday, March 28, 2010 in Darien. Born on September 19, 1924 in Logan, WV, she was the daughter of the late Robert Hayner and Lona Drake Hayner of Curry, WV. She was 85 After attending Logan General Hospital School of Nursing, she served in the WAVES, Navy Medical Service at different locations. While serving at the U.S. Marine Corp. base at Camp Lejune, NC, she met a marine, Anthony T. Improta of Darien, CT. They were married in 1946. They returned to Darien and remained there after "Tony" completed his studies at Yale University in 1948. Darien was home to them throughout their 58 years of marriage. Jean, as she was known, was active in numerous charitable, political social and educational activities. She was a long time member of Noroton Presbyterian Church. She was an avid reader and gardener. She is survived by her three children, son David and his wife Maura of West Redding, CT; daughter Gina Borra and her husband Edward of Berthoud, CO; son Wayne of Darien and five grandchildren, David, Matthew, Bradley, Nicola and Emma all of West Redding, CT. She is also survived by one brother, Paul Hayner of Beckley, WV; numerous nieces and nephews; and a former daughter-in-law, Deborah, who remained a good friend. Jean was predeceased by her husband Tony and a daughter, Carol, who died after only two days of life. The family will receive friends at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. A Funeral Service will be held at the Noroton Presbyterian Chapel, 2011 Post Road, Darien on Thursday, April 1, 2010 at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery, Darien.
