Obituary of Wendy Van Cott Johnson

Wendy Van Cott Johnson of Darien and Southwest Harbor, Maine, a former journalist, died Sunday, January 24, 2010, at her home in Darien. Mrs. Johnson, 52, was the wife of Robert "Robin" E.L. Johnson III for 25 years. Mrs. Johnson graduated from Holton Arms School in Washington, D.C., Smith College and the Columbia University School of Journalism. She enjoyed a career in New York City at the Continental Grain Company and Changing Times and Money magazines before focusing on raising her two boys, at times in far away places around the world. She was an avid lover of animals, a passionate reader of fine literature, and a skilled practitioner of the art of correspondence, sending a steady stream of deeply thoughtful and gracefully written letters to family and friends. Mrs. Johnson will be remembered as a "devoted, gentle daughter and exceptionally loving and nurturing wife and mother," said her family. Besides her husband, Mrs. Johnson is survived by her parents, Patty and Jim Van Cott, of Clinton; and her two sons, Nicholas, a senior at Bowdoin College, and Maxwell, a senior at Greens Farms Academy. In addition, Mrs. Johnson is survived by her sister, Betsy of Massachusetts; her brothers, Brad Van Cott of West Chester, PA., and David Van Cott of Darien; six nieces and nephews; as well as many friends. A memorial service will be held at the United Church of Rowayton, 210 Rowayton Avenue, Rowayton on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 4:00 PM. Burial will be private.
