Obituary of Herbert H. Miller, Jr.

Mr. Herbert H. Miller, Jr., who has homes in Rowayton, CT and Vero Beach, FL passed away on August 7, 2008. He was 83 years old. Born on March 31, 1925 in St. Albans, NY, Mr. Miller graduated from St. Albans High School, attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and received a degree in chemical engineering. Mr. Miller attended the U.S. Naval Midshipmen School of New York at Columbia University and served as a 1st Lieutenant of the Navy on a mine sweeper in the Pacific during WW II. In June of 1946, he was accepted to Harvard Business School, however due to illness in the family could not attend. Mr. Miller started working for A. B. Massa Paper Corporation in 1947 and served as President from 1956 to 2003, and then as the company's CEO thru 2007. A. B. Massa Paper Corporation is headquartered in Darien. Mr. Miller married Deyanne Farrell on February 18, 1950 at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York. They moved to New Canaan in 1956 and summered on Nantucket Island. They were members of Woodway Country Club and New Canaan Country Club in Connecticut, Sankaty Head Golf Club on Nantucket, and Coral Beach Club in Bermuda. Mr. Miller was married to Deyanne Farrell Miller, who passed away in 1988 for 38 years. He later married Gloria Bennett in 1990 from Rowayton where they settled. They enjoyed vacationing in their home in Vero Beach, FL where they belonged to Riomar Country Club and Indian River Club. In addition to his wife, Gloria, Mr. Miller leaves two sons: Graham D. Miller and family of Darien; Bryce Miller of Park City, UT; a daughter, Deyanne Miller Urbahn and family of Saratoga Springs, NY; three step-daughters, Connie Bennett of Rowayton; Victoria Bennett and family of Rowayton; Robin Bennett Osborne and family of E. Thetford, VT; and step-son, John Bennett and family of Wilton. Mr. Miller was a devoted husband and father. His integrity, Generosity and sense of humor will be cherished by his family. He was equally respected in the paper industry, on the golf course, and in the community. A celebration of Mr. Miller's life will be held at Woodway Country Club in Darien on Thursday, September 18th, 2008 at 5:00 PM.
