Obituary of Elizabeth Grant

Surrounded by her loving family, Elizabeth (Betty) Grant passed into Gods hands to join her husband on Saturday, December 1st, 2018. She was 80 years old. Betty was born in Salterstown, County Louth, Ireland on August 10th, 1938 to Patrick and Rose Ebbitt. She learned her strong Irish principles of hard work, strong family, love and loyalty growing up on her family farm and adventuring around the towns of Dunlear and Dundalk. At 17 she decided to join her two sisters in the United States and moved to Byram, CT in 1955. Shortly after she met the love her life, Patrick Grant of Donegal, Ireland, and they married in February of 1961. Pat and Betty shared 15 amazing years together, moving from Portchester to Norwalk, and finally to Darien where they set up their home with their four children, Eilish, Patrick, Michael and Kim. After losing Pat in 1976, Betty fully dedicated her next 42 years to her four children and eight grandchildren. Betty worked multiple jobs to insure her kids and their families would have great opportunities. Betty was a fixture around Darien her whole life. Her frequent stops at Palmers, Pear Tree Point Beach, her kids sporting events, or St. Thomas More Church made her friends to so many Darien residents. Betty was of strong Catholic faith and that faith helped her through every stage of her life. When Betty wasnt traveling the roads of Darien, she could be found gardening, baking Irish Soda bread, or preparing for her famous Thanksgiving family gatherings. Betty is remembered as an incredible woman and role model to all who knew her. She dearly loved her four children, and that was matched by her love for her eight grandchildren. She was also a special friend, sister, and aunt to many. Betty is survived by her four loving siblings: Rose Traynor, Margaret Sayers, Patrick Ebbitt, and Brian Ebbitt. She is also survived by her four loving children and their families; Eilish and Jeff Valente of Darien, CT with their children, Lauren and Kellie; Patrick and Gwynith Grant of Ridgewood, NJ with their children, Conor, Brandon, and Erin; Michael and Heidi Grant of Yarmouth, ME with their children, Patrick, Hannah and Caroline; and Kim Grant and August Brinker of Brooklyn, NY. The family will receive friends at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 from 9:15 to 10:15 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 AM at St. John Church, 1986 Post Road, Darien. Burial will follow at St. John Cemetery, Darien.
