Obituary of Eileen Therese Ward Conway

Eileen Therese Ward Conway, of Stamford, CT, formerly of Greenville, SC, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 2, 2019 after a full life, and an inspiring and courageous battle with progressive dementia. Eileen was a vibrant woman who always aspired to excellence. She was also deeply committed to her Catholic faith throughout her lifetime. Eileen was born in New York City in 1933, to Joseph and Nancy Ward. She was predeceased by her parents, and her sister, Anne Marie O’Doherty. Eileen’s primary education was at St. Benedicts School in the Bronx, NY; followed by the Villa Maria Academy, also in the Bronx, NY. She then attended Barnard College, followed by Good Counsel College. In 1954 she decided to explore the world and became a stewardess for Capitol Airlines. She later returned to school earning her Teaching Credential in 1967 and began her career as an educator. She went on to earn Masters and Doctorate degrees from Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY, with a concentration in reading. Throughout her career in education she worked as a primary school teacher, school principal, and district administrator. In her later teaching career she also worked in higher education. She married Thomas J. Conway in 1957, who predeceased her in 2003. Eileen is survived by her four sons, Joseph of Indio, CA; Thomas A. and his wife Mary of Stamford, CT; Anthony of Greenville, SC; and John and his wife Regina of Stamford, CT. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Calling hours will be held at Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien, CT on Tuesday, November 5, 2019, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM, and 6:00 – 9:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, November 6, 2019, at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 4 Riverside Avenue, Greenwich, CT. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 10 West Stevens Avenue, Hawthorne, NY.
