Obituary of Stephen Edwards Nightingale

Stephen Edwards Nightingale of Darien, CT, died at his home on Friday, April 11th, 2008. He was 85. He was born on March 18, 1923 in Providence, RI, the son of Helen Edwards Nightingale and John K. H. Nightingale. He had two sisters who predeceased him, Helena Nightingale and Edith Nightingale Burt. He grew up in Providence, RI and attended Providence Country Day School. He later attended Princeton University, graduating in 1945, and Columbia Business School. He served three years in the United State Navy from 1943 to 1946 attaining the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. Steve married Sally Aborn Lord on June 25, 1949 in Providence. Steve spent his entire career with Union Carbide Corporation beginning in West Virginia and later in New York City, working in a variety of accounting and financial positions. He served as corporate treasurer of Union Carbide from 1971 until his retirement in 1982. He was an avid sailor his entire life, and was a lifelong member of the Saunderstown Yacht Club in Saunderstown, RI and a member of the Noroton Yacht Club in Darien beginning in 1956. He was a past commodore at Noroton. He was also a passionate golfer and was a member of the Silvermine Golf Club in Norwalk, CT. Upon his retirement in 1982, he became very active in numerous charitable activities in his hometown of Darien, including the Darien United Way, the Darien Beautification commission, and the Darien Land Trust. In 1989, he received the Darien Chamber of Commerce's award for Lifetime Achievement. Steve is survived by his wife of 59 years, three sons and seven grandchildren. His sons all live in Connecticut: Stephen Nightingale in West Hartford, Peter Nightingale of Darien, and David Nightingale of Wilton. A memorial service is planned at St. Luke's Episcopal Parish 1864 Post Road in Darien on Wednesday, April 16th, 2008 at 2:00 PM. A private burial is planned in Providence, RI.
