Obituary of Judith Anne Felder
Please share a memory of Judith to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Judith Felder, a longstanding resident of Darien for nearly fifty three years, passed away peacefully in her Darien home on Thursday morning, February 13, 2014. Judith, known to family and friends as Judy, was predeceased by her husband, Edward A. Felder, MD. on November 10, 2013.
Judy was a loving and devoted wife and mother who dedicated her life and career in support of her physician husband, as well as to the care of her children. Her many friends were a vital and important focus of her life. Judy remained loyal and committed to all her friendships as long as she was able. She wrote diligently to others all her life, and never forgot a birthday or anniversary.
Her charm, dignity, and grace were recognized by all who knew her. Judy was a gentle, refined, and beautiful lady who was loved by most all those she knew during her life. She had a marvelous sense of humor and laugh that was infectious to others.
Judy's skills as a gourmet cook, as well as her impressive sense for fine entertaining made for many memorable evenings with friends during her life. Judy's love and caring for others was conveyed through her entertaining and cooking. Dinners with Judy and her husband were also much appreciated in The Moorings in Vero Beach, Florida, where she lived during the winter months with her retired husband for many years.
Judy was born in Hyannis, Cape Cod, Massachusetts and spent her childhood in both Marstons Mills and Osterville on Cape Cod. Although she spent most of her life in Darien, Judy was always a "Cape Codder" at heart. Indeed, Judy's engagement to her future husband had to be approved by the salty village elders who met in those days to consider such things. Judy often heard friends lovingly ask her to pronounce words such as "car" and "yard" in order to hear her Cape Cod accent which she never lost.
Judy was an avid swimmer who adored long swims in Long Island Sound each day, beginning in early spring when no one else would dare to venture into the water. Neither cold nor water full of jellyfish could keep her from her swimming. She adored the Darien shore in all seasons, but particularly in summer.
Judy received her R.N. from The Backus Hospital School of Nursing in 1946. After receiving her nursing degree, Judy worked as head operating room surgical nurse at Backus Hospital in Norwich, CT. She was always proud of her professional work there.
During her life Judy enjoyed travel, off shore fishing and boating, and dinners at Wee Burn Country Club. There may be a few who remember the Royle Round Up and the lady who ran the balloon dart booth, braving many a stray dart thrown by the children. In those days, Judy contributed much to Royle School as a volunteer. She also survived some years as a den mother for the Cub Scouts.
Judy will be greatly missed by her many friends and her family. She is survived by her sisters Lois Efinchuk of Mystic Connecticut, and Carolyn Schuman of Kissimmee, Florida. She leaves three children: Edward A. Felder, Jr. and spouse Constance D. Felder; Charles T. Felder; Susann M. Dempsey and her spouse Thomas Dempsey. Judy also leaves her six wonderful grandchildren: Kathy Dempsey; Pamela Cook and spouse Daniel Cook; Christopher Felder; William Felder; and the twins Kelly and Sarah Felder. They share many early memories of summer visits in Darien with their "Gram."
A memorial will be planned by the family at a later date.
