Obituary of Edward N. Cartnick

Edward Nathaniel Cartnick passed away on October 21, 2010 in Norwalk, Connecticut. He was born in Garfield, New Jersey on October 18, 1914, the son of Louis Cartnick and Mary Schwartz, the youngest of five children. He grew up in Clifton, New Jersey where he was valedictorian of his high school class. He graduated from Harvard College in 1936 and received his M.D. degree cum laude from Tufts University in 1940. He served an internship and residency in Kings County Hospital, Brooklyn, in Obstetrics-Gynecology and served in the U.S. Army Medical Corp from 1942-1946 achieving the rank of Major. Dr. Edward (Ned) Cartnick married Marie Mitten in 1942 and they eventually moved to Long Island and had three children. He set up his practice in Garden City, New York and was a Board Certified Gynecologist. He retired in 1986. He served as Director of Ob-Gyn at Mercy Hospital, Rockville Centre, New York and as Director of Gynecologic Oncology at Nassau County Medical Center in Uniondale, New York. During his medical career, Dr. Cartnick was a Governor of the American College of Surgeons for New York as well as a Founding Fellow of the American College of Ob-Gyn. He also served as President of the Brooklyn Long Island Chapter of the American College of Surgeons and was an Associate Professor of OBGYN at SUNY at Stony Brook. Ned and Marie retired to Nassau Point, New York where he served as Secretary of the North Fork Country Club in Cutchogue. They eventually went down to Vero Beach, Florida and lived in John's Island and the Oak Harbor Club. Last spring, Ned moved up to The Waveny Care Center in New Canaan, Connecticut where he could be near his family. Ned is survived by two daughters, Christine Merritt of Darien, CT and Lois Germano of Brightwaters, NY, and a son, Edward Cody Cartnick of Dover, NH as well as ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was a wonderful father, a caring, compassionate doctor, and to the end, a refined gentleman. He loved learning, books, music and travel. We will always remember him at the helm of his boat, The Quest. He loved his long walks with dogs and family. We will miss him enormously. There will be a private family mass on November 6th at 10:00 at St. Helen's Chapel, 2025 20th Avenue, Vero Beach, Florida.
