I went on a Women's retreat with the Women's Brown Bag lunch group a number of years ago and Martha was with us, what insight she brought to the retreat and what fun we had in the evening. I always enjoyed her stories and comments at the meetings, and we would run into each other often at Palmers or downtown, always a smile. I know she will be missed by many and i will always remember the strong, smiling Martha running around town on her scooter. My prayers are with all her family and close friends.

As a close friend of Marty and Bill in the 1960s and 1970s I saw her as a terrific and loving mother and role model to young children and their friends, as a remarkably streetwise New Yorker, and generous person with a rich sense of humor. She introduced me one night to the music Simon and Garfunkel. I am awed at the life she led after our paths went separate ways and I am truly sorry that they did so.

Martha Kirk leapt into action during my families last chance efforts to save our daughter's life. Within a day or two Martha made arrangements for our daughter to be admitted into Sloan Kettering and be present herself to guide our daughter into hospital and meet with doctors. Martha was not in remission at this time. She also managed to keep us informed every inch of the way! My heart goes out to all of Martha's family and we send them our sincerest condonlences. Her spirit will always be with us and our surviving children, Frederick G.B. Hard, III, Sarah T. Hard and Kenneth B. Hard

Dear Bill and Family, Many of us will remember "Marty" as the ebullient classmate at prep school where she was great in sports, full of energy, and loudly proclaiming the latest adventures of her roomies. She was tireless. I wish I had known her as the remarkable adult she became. May you all carry with you such joyful, lively memories of Martha, and may her love surround you always.

Martha and Bill unselfishly boarded my son Dan so he could finish Darien High School. The circumstances leading to this need were quite desperate, and Dan and I will never forget the support that they provided Dan as second parents. Martha served an amazing array of her fellow citizens and will be remembered lovingly by all.
