Obituary of Dorothy Perkins Bartlett
Please share a memory of Dorothy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dorothy Perkins Bartlett of Darien died peacefully Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at Stamford Hospital after a brief illness. She was born April 23, 1923, in Cambridge, MA, daughter of the late Frank and Elsie (Crispin) Perkins.
Dorothy grew up in Cambridge and Wellesley Hills, MA. She received a B.A. and M.A. in Mathematics from Boston University. During WW II she worked as a mathematician in the MIT radiation lab, and later, at Boston University and Yale University, her research contributed to the development of the U.S. space program.
Dorothy and her family moved to Darien in 1959 and she taught math at Darien High School for 25 years. She was a member of Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.) for many years, and a long time active member of the First Congregational Church of Darien, very involved in the Women's Association, the Reading Group, and the Prayer Shawl Ministry. When her children were in public school, she was often the Room Mother, and also served as the Girl Scout Cookie Chairperson. Her math skills were in great demand, so she served many years as treasurer for the Stamford YWCA, the Women's Association of the Darien Congregational Church, and the P.E.O. Her greatest interests were her children, her church family and P.E.O. sisters, Sudoku, and of course, the Boston Red Sox. She loved going to the Sugar Bowl and showing off the latest decorations to visiting family members.
Dorothy is survived by her children Diantha Howard and husband Alan, of Grand Isle, VT, Wendy Lou Bartlett of Marietta, OH, and Ray (Bart) Bartlett III and wife Shilo, of Fountain Valley, CA, her former daughter-in-law Linda Slack of Tempe, AZ, and her grandchildren Justin and Kristin Howard, Henry and Lindsey Bartlett. She was predeceased by her infant daughter Cynthia Mae Bartlett. She was also predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Ray H. Bartlett, Jr. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 13, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of Darien, 14 Brookside Road, Darien. A private burial will be held at Hope Cemetery in Kennebunk, ME.
