Obituary of Edmond F. Rondepierre

Edmond F. Rondepierre, 83, died May 15, 2013 at his home in Darien, CT. Mr. Rondepierre was born January 15th, 1930, in Queens, NY to Jules Rondepierre of Le Donjon, France and Margaret Moore Rondepierre of Glasgow, Scotland.
Mr. Rondepierre held a J.D. from the Temple University School of Law and a B.S. from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. He was admitted to and held membership in the District of Columbia Bar, the Connecticut Bar Association, The American Bar Association, the Inter American Bar Association and the U.S. Supreme Court.
Following service as a licensed officer on merchant vessels and a commissioned officer on U.S. Navy vessels, Mr. Rondepierre embarked on his insurance career in 1955 with INA (Insurance Company of North America) as a Marine Surveyor and would go on to become General Counsel of the INA Group in 1970 and Deputy Chief of Legal Affairs in 1976.
Mr. Rondepierre joined General Reinsurance Corporation in Greenwich, Connecticut in 1977, as Senior Vice President and General Counsel. He served on the Board of the International Association of Defense Counsel during his tenure and also authored several industry books.
After retiring in 1995, Mr. Rondepierre was a co-founder and served as President and Director Emeritus of ARIAS (US), a not-for-profit corporation that promotes improvement of the insurance and reinsurance arbitration process for the international and domestic markets, as a highly respected certified arbitrator/umpire.
An avid sailor, Mr. Rondepierre was a member of the Stamford Yacht Club where he served as secretary on the board of directors. He died quietly at home surrounded by his wife and three surviving children. He was preceded in death by his brother Roger in 1969 and by his son Peter Edmond Rondepierre in April of 2012. Mr. Rondepierre is survived by his wife Nan Rondepierre, brother and sister-in-law Jules and Sandy Rondepierre of Havre de Grace, MD, son Stephen C. Rondepierre of Springfield, MA, daughter and son-in-law Aimee and Robert Amarant of Long Valley, NJ, daughter and son-in-law Anne and Norman Riczu of Trumbull, CT, eight grandchildren James, Elizabeth, Carly, Alison, Annie, Julia, Charles and William Edmond and one great-grandson Michael.
A memorial service will be held at St. Thomas Moore Church in Darien on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at 10:30 AM, burial will be private at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien.
