Obituary of Charles John Evers

Please share a memory of Charles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Charles (Chuck) John Evers, 76, died on Wednesday evening after suffering a stroke. Charles had been battling Parkinson's disease for several years. He died with his devoted wife Carolyn, his eldest daughter Kathie, youngest daughter Patrice, and son Christopher at his side. An only child, Charles was born in Queens, NY, on September 11, 1939, to Charles and Veronica Evers. Charles received a full scholarship to St. John's University with a degree in business, with the intent of becoming a CPA. Charles interned with Peat, Marwick, and Mitchell while earning his degree and was immediately hired in 1961 after graduating at the top of his class, and quickly rose to the level of partner. Charles eventually took a position as the Technical Director of the Public Oversight Board, where he spent the remainder of his career. Charles was an avid baseball and college basketball fan. The Yankees and St. John's were "his" teams. His love of the game of baseball prompted a lifetime of collecting baseball memorabilia, especially autographs. For many years Charles, his wife Carolyn, son Chris, and daughters: Kathie, Patrice and Therese made an annual pilgrimage to Cooperstown for the yearly Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies. In addition to his love of the game, Charles loved fishing and was a member of the Darien Boat Club for many years. His true love was his family. Charles married Carolyn Marissa Follert on August 12, 1961. He was a devoted son, father and most especially husband. He adored his wife Carolyn and she adored him. With a love of family and the outdoors, the Evers clan spent much time camping, up and down the eastern seaboard, from Key West to the Bay of Fundi, and out West exploring the state/national parks system, enjoying the wildlife and beauty of the USA. Carolyn and Charles also enjoyed traveling together, and although they had no problem flying abroad they preferred to stay closer to home. Their favorite places were Chincoteague VA, Bass Rocks Mass, and of course Cooperstown NY. The most important travel requirement was that they be together and if their kids or grandkids, Cavan (21) and Shannon (18), could travel with themeven better. Tragedy hit the family in 1986 when, at the age of 15, their second daughter Therese was killed in a car accident on her way home from Darien High School. The family was devastated but the strength of their faith and family pulled them through together. Charles had a Catholic School upbringing and was an active member of the St. John's Parish for 40 years. Over the years, Charles was a Eucharistic Minister, was involved in the "Family Life" program, taught religious instruction to children, and was always willing to help out where he could. Charles was admired and respected by his fellow parishioners, coworkers, neighbors, friends and family. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him well. The family will receive friends on Monday, March 21, 2016 from 2-4PM, and 6-8PM at the Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday March 22, 2016 at St. John R.C. Church in Darien at 10AM. Burial will follow at St. John Cemetery in Norwalk. In lieu of flowers, we suggest, and Charles would appreciate, a donation to the Therese Evers Memorial Scholarship. Checks should be made out to St. John Roman Catholic Church/Therese Evers Memorial Scholarship. Mailing address: St. John Roman Catholic Church, ATTN: Scholarship Committee/Therese Evers Memorial Scholarship, 1986 Post Road, Darien, CT 06820. Funeral Home: Edward Lawrence Funeral Home 2119 Post Road Darien, CT USA 06820
