Ferd Trombini, 93, passed away peacefully on Thursday March 21 at home in Darien, CT.
Ferd was born in Switzerland in 1919 to Ferrucio and Marie Bauder Trombini. He came to this country with his parents as a young boy and grew up in Rhinebeck, NY. In 1942 he married Phyllis Updike.
He was a veteran of World War II in the United States Army and served three years in the front lines of MacArthur's island hopping Pacific campaign.
After completing business school he began a distinguished career at IBM. He was the one of the first IBMers to design applications for the innovative 702 computer, designed the first internal payroll program for IBM and was the senior systems architect for the revolutionary IBM 360 computer. He was a recognized expert in computer hardware and software as they relate to manufacturing applications. His accomplishments at IBM earned him the IBM "Man of the Year" distinction in 1967 as well as the President's Award in 1973.
Ferd was an avid golfer and played on the IBM golf team. After retirement in 1992 he and his wife moved from their home in Hyde Park, NY to Darien, CT. They spent most of their winters in Barbados where they developed many friendships. Mr. Trombini is survived by his wife of 70 years, Phyllis, his daughter and her husband, Nancy and William Nareski, his grandson Nicolas Nareski, his granddaughter and her husband, Ursula and Jarret Lewis, and two great grandsons, Maxwell and Zachary Lewis, all of Darien, CT and his granddaughter Katharine Nareski of Stamford, CT.
