Barbara Scribner, the daughter of the late Howard and May Tierney Colvin, passed away on Monday, September 18, 2006 at the age of 79. She was a direct descendant of Samuel Gorton who arrived in Plymouth, MA in 1686. Seeking more freedom of religion, he traveled to Rhode Island, where he staked out a territory. After several trips to England, he persuaded the Duke of Warwick to grant him the territory, which became Warwick, RI.
Mrs. Scribner was born in Bangor, ME on December 18, 1926. She grew up in Darien, CT and attended Darien schools and studied commercial art at Pratt Institute. Mrs. Scribner had a prestigious career as a non-fiction editor and writer. She produced many family features in the 1950’s for McCall’s Magazine including the “How American Lives” series. In the 1960’s, she became associate copy editor and building editor for American Home magazine, a Curtis Publication. She produced the “Blueprint House” series as well as many features on home ownership. After her son Scott was born, she became Director of Public Information at the Stamford Museum & Nature Center, where in addition to promoting the Museum, she indulged her interest in history, producing many long-and short-term exhibitions on Americana which were formally reviewed in the New York Times and other publications. She also produced many special events. She was recognized nationally, throughout her career, by having her biography published in “Who’s Who in American”.
Locally, Mrs. Scribner served on the Board of DCSP, publicizing school activities. She served as a volunteer at the Hollow Tree School, Mather Junior High and Darien High School.
At St. Luke’s Church she served on the Education Committee for 10 years, taught Sunday school and produced the Christmas pageant. She was a member of the Episcopal Church Women and handled publicity for their events. She and her husband, Harold, managed a Star League baseball team for two years.
She was a past matron for the Norma Chapter of the Eastern Star in Darien and was currently a member of Rosemary Chapter in Stamford.
Her husband, Harold Scribner and a brother Norman Colvin predeceased her. She is survived by her son Scott and his longtime companion Donna Marie Ruggiero.
