Obituary of Therese Thomas McKitterick

Please share a memory of Therese to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
McKitterick Therese Thomas, 91, of Darien, Connecticut died peacefully on January 5th after a long illness. She was the beloved wife of John B. McKitterick and mother of William George McKitterick and Tom McKitterick, and grandmother of Simone McKitterick, William McKitterick and Victoria McKitterick. Born in Newton, Massachusetts in 1920, she grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts with her mother Louise Thomas, her father Errold Thomas and her sister Victoria Jacobson. She graduated from Radcliff College in 1942 and met John, a graduate of Amherst College while he was attending Harvard Business School. They married on June 12th, 1943, having been engaged on Valentine's Day of that year. They started their life together in Cleveland, Ohio, where John worked for General Electric and in 1954 moved to Darien when he was transferred to the New York Headquarters where he rose to be a Vice President. Therese, known as Teedie by her friends, worked as a young woman at the Fogg Museum of Art in Cambridge. Later she established and worked in the Tokeneke School Library in Darien where her two sons attended. She subsequently served at the Darien Town library for many years. Teedie was a lovely woman, always fashionable who extended herself to her friends and to her community. In recent years she served as President of the Darien Community Association from 1987-1990 and was very influential in its development. She placed special importance on the Scholarship fund. She is survived and grieved for by her adoring husband, sons and grandchildren, her dog Pepe as well as by her wonderful caregiver, Norah Santos who helped make her final years so enjoyable. There will be a memorial celebration at the Darien Community Association on January 21st, 2012, at noon. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations are gratefully accepted for the Darien Community Association Scholarship Fund, 274 Middlesex Road, Darien, CT 06820. Funeral Home: Edward Lawrence Funeral Home 2119 Post Road Darien, CT USA 06820
