Please share a memory of Edgar to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Edgar G. (Jack) Baugh, a resident of Darien since 1960, died on Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at Waveny Care Center in New Canaan.
Born December 8, 1923 in Tazewell, VA, Mr. Baugh was a World War II veteran whose five years of military service included a tour of duty with the 8th Air Force in England, where he flew combat missions over Germany as a navigator on B-17 bombers.
After the war, Mr. Baugh took advantage of the G.I. Bill of Rights and attended the University of Nebraska and Georgia Tech, graduating from the latter in 1949 with an engineering degree. He then embarked upon a 37-year career with Exxon, a career which included a total of 10 years abroad in Libya, Kenya and England. During his years abroad, however, his home base was always Darien.
After his 1986 retirement from Exxon in London, Mr. Baugh returned to Darien and became active in local civic affairs, in particular the Red Cross, the Land Trust and the Methodist Church. He was a member of the Tokeneke Club for 10 years and a member of the Wee Burn Country Club for over 30 years. He was an enthusiastic tennis player and a devotee of duplicate bridge. He also had a special love for gospel hymns and operatic arias.
Survivors include a sister, Mary Shannon Korb of Honesdale, PA; a daughter, Sherry Van Horne of Darien; and two grandchildren, Diane of Chicago, IL and Douglas Van Horne of Darien. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Helen Christenberry Baugh.
Memorial services will be private. The Edward Lawrence Funeral Home handled the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Darien Land Trust, P. O. Box 1074, Darien, CT 06820.
