Obituary of Dr. Augusta Smith
Dr. Augusta (Dana) Smith, a long time resident of Darien, passed away on Monday, May 2, 2011 in Darien. Born on November 24, 1916 in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Anna Elizabeth Beetz and Harry E. Meyer. She was 94.
Dana received a B.S. degree and a M.A. degree from Columbia University and received an Honorary Doctorate from Post University in Waterbury, CT. She modeled for Elizabeth Arden. She was a buyer for Taylored Woman on 5th Avenue and a buyer of flowers for George A. Beetz Florist, a family business. She also taught dancing and health education.
She was president and member of numerous town, garden and women's clubs. She was past president of the New York and Connecticut division of Woman's National Farm and Garden Association, Inc. and a life member of The Associated County Women of the World. She was also a member of the Wee Burn Country Club in Darien and the University Club of New York.
She is survived by two nieces, Carol Keane of Orefield, PA and Loraine Anne Cernak of Clemmons, NC. She is also survived by two grand nieces and two grand nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph Christie Smith in 1965.
A Funeral Service will be held at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien on Thursday, May 12, 2011 at 12:00 PM. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, NY.
