Obituary of Arthur Procter
Arthur Wyman Procter, Jr.
Arthur Wyman Procter, Jr., died peacefully on January 26 of complications of congestive heart failure at Stamford Hospital at the age of 78. The son of Arthur W. Procter and Kathryn Flanders Procter, he grew up in Pelham NY. He was an Eagle Scout and graduated form Phillips Exeter Academy, Williams College and Yale Law School. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers. Early in his career, he worked in NYC as an Admiralty lawyer for Lord, Day & Lord where one of his most interesting cases was the sinking of the Andrea Doria. He spent the rest of his career as an attorney for the IBM Corporation.
Wyman lived in Darien since 1968 and was active in its town government. He served on both the Representative Town Meeting and the Planning and Zoning Commission for more that a decade. He also was a representative to the Zoning Board of Appeals, the Town Government Advisory Committee and the Park and Recreation Commission over the years.
He was a member of the Yale Club, the Middlesex Club, the Silvermine Golf Club, the Senior Mens Club and St. Lukes Episcopal Church. He was an avid gardener both at home and at the Cherry Lawn Gardens which he fought successfully to save when it was being given up for playing fields. He played an excellent game of bridge three or four times a week.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Anne Carleton Procter, four daughters and their husbands, Prudence Procter Haines and Bruce of Media, PA, Ellen Procter Wilson and Peter of Piedmont, CA, Margaret Flanders Procter and her husband, John C. Johnston of San Diego, CA and Katherine Wyman Procter of Summit, NJ and her husband, William H. Lewis, 8 grandchildren and a brother, William F. Procter of Escondido, CA
He will be remembered for his outrageous sense of humor, his devotion to his daughters, the stories, songs and poems he wrote for his grandchildren and the funny pranks he pulled on many occasions. He will be sorely missed.
Memorial services will be held at St Lukes Episcopal Church, 1864 Post Rd., Darien on Friday February 1 at 3:00 PM
