Obituary of Joseph A. Bruno, Sr.

Joseph Anthony Bruno, Sr., son of the late James and Rose Bruno, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 18, 2011, at the age of 83 at his home in Darien, CT with his family by his side after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. Born February 16, 1928, Joe was a lifelong Darien resident who graduated from Darien High School class of 1946 with his high school sweetheart and future wife, Barbara Ann Punzelt. They were married in 1949 at St. John's Church in Darien, CT. After graduating high school, Joe served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Italy. In 1947, he started the successful family business now known as Bruno Construction Co. Joe was a talented athlete and avid golfer; positioned as the captain of the Darien High School football team and player on the school's baseball team, and was a member of the Shorehaven Golf Club for 38 years where he served on the board of directors. Joe was a member and regular attendee of St. Thomas More Church in Darien, CT. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Barbara; three sisters Rose Papp, Mary Fraccola, and Tessie Sniffen; four children Joseph, Jr. and his wife Gretchen, Deborah Goyette and her husband Henry, Jeffrey and his wife Susan, and David and his wife Donna; 11 grandchildren Clinton Goyette and his wife Kathy, Melissa O'Brien, Jessica McGarvey and her husband Brian, Matthew, Emily, Stephanie, Michael, William, Christopher, Alexander, and Nicholas; two great-grandchildren Julia and Tyler O'Brien; and his two loyal dogs Kadie and Georgia. He was the heart of the family, a dedicated husband, loving father, and proud grandfather and great-grandfather. A funeral Mass will be held in his honor on Friday, February 25, 2011, at 10:00 AM at St. John's Church, 1986 Post Road in Darien, CT, with a private burial.
