Obituary of Shirley J. Scribner Hanks
Shirley J. Scribner Hanks, a resident of Norwalk, passed away on Monday, July 4, 2016 in Norwalk. She was the daughter of late Harold B. Scribner, Sr. and Alice M. Lee Scribner of Darien. She was born on February 2, 1930 in their home on Fairfield Avenue in Darien and attended the Darien Schools and the Merrill Business School. Shirley worked for many years for Stop and Shop as the office manager and later on at Life Study Fellowship in Darien. She was very active in the Noroton Heights Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She loved the Darien beaches, gardening, reading and church.
Shirley met her husband, Lynn E. Hanks, in Stamford, and they married in 1950 when they were working in the F. W. Woolworth store. They lived in various New England towns and raised a family of five children in Darien. After celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in 2000 with a gala party with lots of family and friends, they moved to Meadville, PA. Shirley and her husband struck a deal when they were first married; if he would learn to dance she would learn to play cards. They did and a good time was had by both. They celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary in 2014. She is survived three daughters, Sharon H. Bixler and her husband Allan of Darien; Carole H. Ponichtera of Arizona and Marjorie R. Hanks of Norwalk; two sons, John W. Hanks of Norwalk and William F. Hanks of Arizona; and four grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Lynn in June of 2014; and daughter, Karen L. Hanks who died three days after her birth.
Shirley is also survived by two brothers, Albert Scribner of Washington and Charles Scribner of Darien and a sister, Elizabeth Scribner Richter also of Darien.
The family will receive friends at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien on Thursday, July 14, 2016 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, July 15, 2016 at 11:00 AM at the Darien United Methodist Church, 345 Middlesex Road, Darien. The interment will be private.
