Obituary of Earle K. Angstadt, Jr.
Earle K. Angstadt, Jr., a resident of Vero Beach, FL, a New Canaan, CT resident since 2001 and a former resident of Darien from 1956 to 2001, passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2007 in Vero Beach, FL. Born February 16, 1926 in Reading, PA, he was the son of the late Earle K. Angstadt and Katharine Auman Angstadt. He was 80.
Earle graduated from Admiral Farragut Academy in 1943 and Dartmouth College in 1946. He attended the Amos Tuck Graduate School of Business in 1946, the Senior Executive Program at the Columbia Graduate School of Business in 1957, the IBM Executive Program and the Executive Program at the Aspen Institute in 1977. He enlisted with the U.S. Naval Reserve on July 1, 1943 and was Honorably discharged in 1946.
He retired from The McCall Pattern Company and had been President and C.E.O. from 1970 to 1987. He started his career at R.H. Macy & Co. in New York in 1946 to 1952, as executive trainee to buyer and department manager. At the time he enjoyed the distinction of being at the age of 22 the youngest senior buyer in the 100 year history of the store. He then worked at Young & Rubicam, Inc. from 1952 to 1964 as the Marketing Executive to the Senior Vice President and Division Manager, responsible for such accounts as Kaiser Aluminum, American Airlines, Remington Shavers, International Playtex, Time Magazine, Sports Illustrated, Piels Beer, Tussy Cosmetics and Simmons Mattresses; and worked for Abercrombie & Fitch Co. from 1964 to 1970 as President and Chairman of the Board.
He was a member of the Camp Fire Club of America and served as president from 1984 to 1986; Wee Burn Country Club, John’s Island Club, The Potatuck Club, Pawling Mountain Club, The Windsor Club, the New York Yacht Club, Racquet and Tennis, the Union League Club, Woodway Gun Club and the Pinnacle Club of New York, Inc.
He was also a contributing member of the Chairman’s Club of Vero Beach Museum of Art; a former member of the Dartmouth Alumni Council from 1996 to 2000; a Trustee of the Darien Library; a Director of the Fifth Avenue Association; Director of Schieffelin Trustee of the National Art Museum of Sports; Director of the Madison Square Boy’s Club of New York; Trustee and member of the Executive Committee of the Manhattan Savings Bank; Director of American Bakeries Company; Colorado Outward Bound Expedition in 1975; a member, Elder and served on the Stewardship Committee at Noroton Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife Judith Lummis Angstadt of Vero Beach, FL and New Canaan, CT; two daughters, Katharine Elizabeth Angstadt of Cos Cob, CT and Elizabeth Angstadt Byrne of Ridgefield, CT. He is also survived by his step-children, John Lummis of Jackson, WY; Judith Lummis McGinnis of Atlanta, GA, David Lummis of Weston, CT and Elizabeth Lummis O’Neil of Oakland, CA; 15 step-grandchildren. Also surviving are a sister, Lynn Angstadt of Pittsburgh, PA and a brother Tom Angstadt of San Francisco, CA. He is predeceased by his former wife, Suzanne Ferris Angstadt on December 4, 2001.
A memorial service will be held at the Noroton Presbyterian Church, 2011 Post Road, Darien on Saturday, January 13, 2007 at 11:00 AM. A private family interment will be held at the Memorial Garden at the Noroton Presbyterian Church.
