Obituary of Cornelius T. Finnegan III

Darien resident Cornelius T. Finnegan III, 67, died July 17, 2012, at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine, following a spinal injury suffered at his summer home. Connie was recently retired from the law firm of Willkie Farr & Gallagher, where he was a longtime partner specializing in corporate law. He also worked briefly as general counsel at W. R. Berkley Corporation. Connie was born in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1945 to Ann (O'Sullivan) and Cornelius T. Finnegan Jr., eldest of six boys. He attended high school at Keith Academy in Lowell, where he was valedictorian. He received his BA degree from The College of the Holy Cross in 1966 and his JD in 1972 from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where he was an editor of the Law Review. He served in the Army National Guard for four years. Friends and family appreciated Connie for his modesty, generosity, and playful wit. He was a man of great integrity. Connie could often be found in the stands at local Blue Wave sporting events. After retirement, he was a frequent attendee at the DCA Senior Men's Lecture Series and pursued his interest in history through many courses at Norwalk Community College. Connie was a talented accordion player. He is survived by his wife, Maureen (O'Brien) Finnegan of Darien; sons Cornelius IV of Darien, Christopher of Los Angeles, and Justin of Bhutan; daughter-in-law Erin (Miller) Finnegan; two grandchildren, Cornelius V, and Aoife; brothers Kevin, Barry, Brendan, and Mark; brother Edward predeceased him. The wake will take place at Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road in Darien on Tuesday, July 24, between 5 and 8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Thomas More Church, 374 Middlesex Road in Darien on Wednesday, July 25 at 10:30 AM.
