Obituary of Joseph Henry Allen, Jr.

Joseph Henry Allen, Jr. was born in Evanston, IL on November 9, 1916, the son of Joseph Henry Allen and Ann Eugenia Jansen Allen. He attended public schools in Evanston and was graduated from Kenyon College in 1938, followed by graduate studies at Northwestern and Stanford Universities. During World War II he served four years as a Naval Officer, including duty in the South Pacific area as Aide to Admiral Robert Briscoe, Commander of Pacific Amphibious Group Operations. His career in business included many years with the McGraw-Hill Companies in many locations and in a variety of management positions, including President of the McGraw-Hill Publications Company and a long-time member of the Corporation's Board of Directors. After retiring from McGraw-Hill he joined United Technologies Corporation as Senior Vice President. Later, he served the University of Connecticut as Assistant Dean of the School of Business Administration for seven years. As a 50-year resident of Darien, he was active in Darien community affairs, was a trustee of the Darien Library and a founder of the original Bank of Darien. For the last seven years, he resided in New Canaan. A many-year member of the Wee Burn County Club he was an enthusiastic tennis player and a self-described "cocktail-lounge" pianist. He was predeceased by his wife of seventy years, Eleanor Clark Allen, and is survived by three children: David of Milbrook, NY; Elisabeth Adams of Eden Prairie, MN; and Melinda Beardsley of Darien. Also surviving are five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A memorial service will held at the Noroton Presbyterian Church of Darien on Friday, June 8 at 12:00. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Joseph H. Allen Fund at Norwalk Grassroots Tennis, 394 West Ave., Norwalk, CT 06850.
