Patricia Phelps Lyman, a resident of Darien for 93 years, passed away peacefully at home on January 15th, 2023. Pat was the daughter of Gladys and Norman Lyman, and the granddaughter of Thomas J. and May W. McCarty. Her grandfather was a Vice President and Board Member of the Tokeneke Club in 1928, and could trace his American ancestry back to 1740.

Pat attended Hindley School, and Darien High School, which was located in the current town hall. Pat attended the Katherine Gibbs in NYC.  Pat was employed by Union Trust for over thirty years, retiring as a Head Bookkeeper.

Pat kept horses and dogs throughout her life.  As a teenager, she rode her pony Beauty throughout Tokeneke, and less developed surrounding areas with unpaved roads. Later she rode and attended shows on the Ziegler estate, Ox Ridge and Red Barn Stables. She showed her prize winning Pekingese in local dog shows. Pat was an active member of the Roton Point Association for the past 75 years, and was known to swim from spring until fall in the Long Island Sound. Pat was also a fan of Tony DeMauro’s Patient Lady in the Little Americas Cup races, which she followed from a committee boat off Roton Point.

Pat was an avid sports enthusiast. Growing up, she and her parents attended Yale football, and NY Yankee baseball games. She also attended and enjoyed following other sports including horse racing, golf, tennis, and football.

Pat was a member of St. Lukes Episcopal Church in Darien and leaves no surviving family members.  Pat will be laid to rest in the family plot in New Preston, Connecticut.  A memorial service will be held in the spring at Roton Point.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the ASPCA in honor of Pat’s lifelong passion for animals.
