Mike and I enjoyed many great days at the NBA. We worked on numerous projects together, traveled often and always found time to make the best of every situation. I consider my time with Mike very special and always time well spent. We connected on my levels professionally and personally. My heart was heavy with sadness when I heard what had happened. May God continue to bless your family and know that Mike made such a positive difference in life. He is a Champion.

Q: How did you meet G Michael?
A: I met Michael at the NBA league office when we both worked in the Sponsorship department. I remember Mike as a smart, positive, giving colleague with such a great smile and laugh. While I hadn't seen Michael for many years, the news of his passing was incredibly sad to hear. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this difficult time.
With care,
Mary Reiling Spencer

Q: What will you never forget about G Michael?
A: A FOUNDER OF TACKLE KIDS CANCER.
Mike was such an innovative and deep thinker, and had a quiet creative side that was always working behind the scenes.
While at Hackensack University Medical Center, Peter Hughes and I went to Mike with a concept... create a local pediatric cancer cause-marketing platform to help keep fundraising local and help kids in our area. He challenged us to think big, and called Alan Zucker with the idea that Eli Manning might want to "quarterback" the initiative.
Mike set up the meeting with Eli and we were kind of nervous taking Eli though the concept as he gave us a blank stare - and at the end of the presentation, Eli said "of course...I'm all in" with a big smile, and I saw Mike was smiling too as we realized he had set it all up beforehand.
After a successful launch, Mike had the idea to create a crowd-funding program inspired by all the letters and small donations from schools, kids, sports teams arriving in Eli's and the Giants mailbox. Mike envisioned "Eli's Challenge" where Eli and sponsors would match small donations from grass roots organizations. He was right again and that program has generated $millions for the charitable program.
Mike's passion, creativity and dedication, and the many sponsors and brands he invited to join, is a key reason Tackle Kids Cancer has raised +$8MM. The program wouldn't exist without his vision and efforts.

Dear Leila, Will & Owen,
Mike was a wonderful person, that I’ve been fortunate to call my friend!!! He always had a smile that was infectious & made you want to smile back!
Mike always put family 1st - I was able & fortunate to see it first hand. Mike & Leila hired me 23yrs ago to love & care for their 2 most precious gifts - Will & Owen… what a wonderful family to have had the honor & privilege to be a part of all their lives for the last 23 yrs. I’m grateful to consider “The Stevens” my 2nd family.
My heart is very sad on this day as I say goodbye to a wonderful husband, father & friend.
God now has a New Angel - Mike - who is watching over & smiling on his family everyday!!!!
Mike you will always be loved & remembered but… never forgotten.
love ya Brenda

From the distinct privilege of working on the Dudley Board with Mike, I learned that he was all at once intensely impressive and effective while also delightfully pleasant, giving, and passionate. A truly rare mix of talents that made me grateful to know him and to watch him work. We will miss him deeply. Thank you for everything, Mike!

Mike was my first and only manager at the NBA. It was an incredible time to be there - the exponential growth of the NBA; the launch of the WNBA; and the continued growth and global relevance of USA Basketball – and Mike was a key part of all of that.
Through our work together, Mike taught me some great lessons that made a difference in my career going forward. He was always prepared for any discussion or meeting. I’d stop by his office early in the morning and he already knew the latest news on our clients (maybe more than they knew, he was that good). He was also a very empathetic person, always interested in my family and personal development.
Later, when I was at IBM, we worked together when Mike was with the Giants….it was always great to see a familiar face even though we were on opposites sides of the table (still a tough negotiator, even with friends). Mike was truly one-of-a-kind in the best way and even though we hadn’t talked in a few years, I’ll really miss him. Leila, Will and Owen, I hope hearing these stories let you know that Mike has left a wonderful legacy that deserves to be celebrated. Take care.

My deepest condolences to Leila, Will, and Owen for your loss. Mike loved you so much and always shared great stories about you and was so proud of his sons, who recently graduated and got a job. I met Mike about four years ago. He was a very attentive listener, thoughtful, devoted, and dependable. You could always rely on him. Every time I called him for something, he answered immediately. He always took great notes and gathered all the facts before saying anything or deciding. His energy for work, friends, and family was exceptional. He was also very down to earth and worked with everyone to get the job done. I will never forget when we moved to our new office, and he helped with moving boxes, assembling desks, and even painting an old rusty hood to make the place look nice. He didn’t need to do any of these works, but he was always there for his friends and colleagues, no matter what it took. What a charismatic, selfless, positive, and kind person that I will miss for the rest of my life! He always tried to empower everyone. In less than four years, he became a good friend and a role model for me! About three weeks ago, he explained the role of ballast in a ship, which is to provide stability, and he said I want you to be like a ballast in the company! Now I understand! He was the ballast in our ship! He always tried to bring people together. He always told me that his dad taught him to watch for “What you put in your mouth and what you put out of your mouth.” These are just some examples of what I learned from Mike! I will miss you for the rest of my life, Mike! You left a big void in my heart! God bless your soul! I hope to see you on the other side!

I always called him his full name - Mike Stevens. It just seemed to suit him. He was direct, honest, and I so enjoyed working with him at the NBA during some very fun and intense times. We kept in touch over the years and I loved his energy and positive outlook on everything. He always found a solution. It’s such a shock because he was such a dynamic person. My condolences to the family. So very sorry for this loss.

What makes my memories of Michael both special and unique, is that we started out in our careers at the same time. He at The Equitable and I at MLB in the Commissioner’s Office, as we navigated the pioneering world of sports sponsorship. We were bright eyed kids in the limelight.
Working with Mike and Jim Martin and the whole team managing the sponsorship of the Baseball Alumni Team and traveling the circuit across the country together is legendary, and a highlight in our careers. Mike pushed us to be our best, always with a grin and a smile, and the program’s success speaks for itself. It became the hallmark of sports programs and its legacy lives on.
We are all heartbroken by this crushing loss. At times like this the world stands still. The memories are left, and we are grateful to be united in that way forever.
My deepest and sincerest condolences to Leila, William, Owen, Mrs. Stevens and Mike’s sisters, nieces and nephew. May Mike rest in eternal peace and may his memory and your love for each other sustain you in the days ahead.
God bless you. Sail on, Mike. Sail on.

Mike was one of my all time favorite people at the NBA. He and I really enjoyed working together to help overcome the challenges each of us had. He was always such a positive and upbeat colleague that I had such great respect and admiration for. I am truly in shock to learn of this tragic news. While we've lost touch over the years, he always had a special place in my heart. I am so saddened and want to extend my heartfelt condolences to his entire family. Such a wonderful person. Laila and family: In 2000 we were a large group of 30 year olds newly hired and ready to make a difference at the NBA. I have such fond memories of sitting in the office next to Mike's. Mike would have to tell me to keep my voice down on many occasions! I recall sparring w/him as we both wanted to make sure our own clients got the best tickets, best media presence, best everything... And in the end we always worked it out. We kept in touch over the years and he shared how proud he was of his wonderful family. May his memory be a blessing to you and his extended family and friends. Donna Goldsmith

My thoughts are with Mike’s family. While I fondly remember the years I worked with Mike at the NBA, I will remember him best at how gracious, supportive and helpful he was during my job search process two years ago. He and I connected on the phone during my long drive upstate to visit my father. Mike and I talked for over an hour about the importance of family to both of us. Our call was memorable for its sincerity and kindness.

Mike and I were campers together in the 70s. We met again 30 years later on the Dudley Board. It was wonderful to experience how the energetic, sports loving boy became the passionate, dedicated, and still fun loving man, who gave so generously of his time and talent for the betterment of camp.
May your many happy memories bring some comfort to all of you in the days ahead.

I was fortunate to have Mike on my team at the NBA through his entire time at the league. He was a key contributor during the unprecedented growth and globalization of the NBA in that decade. He was a key part of the success of the 1992 Dream Team in Barcelona, and the launch of the WNBA. I’ll remember Mike quick and a bit quirky sense of humor and the warmth of his friendship. He was a great teammate in every sense of the word.

I enjoyed every moment I spent with Mike. Such a nice, kind, thoughtful, dedicated and smart man. I know he thinks he expanded my family's relationship with our beloved NY Giants, but the reality is that he was the missing spark that made us love the Team even more. I will miss our random lunches and hearing how much he cared for his family. My wife Martha and our 4 kids will all miss him. I will never forget when he brought the Lombardi Trophy to our home to celebrate our victory in Arizona. The trophy paled in comparison to the glow on Mike's face. My thoughts and prayers are with Mike's family. Love, Rich Handler

Although we graduated from Hobart and William Smith, we only had ever known of the legend of Mike. However we are so fortunate to have a great friendship with Leila from college and then at the U of R Med School. It wasn’t until last fall that we had the opportunity to finally meet and get to know Mike at a mini-med school reunion in CT. We all enjoyed such a fun weekend of hiking, pickleball, boating and games and it was clear that Leila had chosen the right guy to share her life with.
