Obituary of Norman Kendrick Carrier
Norman Kendrick Carrier of Flat Rock, North Carolina, passed away on February 8, 2024 at the age of 86. Norman was born on July 11, 1937, in Louisville, Kentucky to Mildred Estelle Cooley (Carrier). Norman was adopted as a young child by Virgil Sampson Carrier, his lifelong father, after Virgil married Mildred in 1942. Norman grew up in the Springfield, IL area, with brief stays in Pensacola, FL and Sitka, AK. Norman graduated from Lanphier High School in 1955.
Norman attended Bradley University in Peoria, IL for three years and was a Sigma Chi brother. Norman earned a B.S. degree at the University of Illinois, Champaign, IL in 1960.
In 1960, Norman got his first full-time job at Young and Rubicam in Chicago, IL. He met and married Janice Elaine Lang in Chicago, IL. They moved to Ballwin, MO where he worked for Anheuser-Busch and had two sons, Tod and David. He later divorced and then married Helen D. Tonas in 1969. They had a son, James, in 1972 in Evanston, IL.
Norman worked in advertising his entire career. He worked for NW Ayer & Son in Chicago from 1971 to about 1979. He moved to the Delafield Island neighborhood in Darien, CT in 1979 and worked for Jordan, McGrath, Case & Taylor in Manhattan, NY. Among many interesting advertising campaigns, Norman worked on Budweiser, AT&T, DeBeers, Tums, Aetna, Alka-Seltzer, and St. Pauli Girl Beer. Norman was a member of the Board of Governors of the New York Council of the American Association of Advertising Agencies, the Institute of Advanced Advertising Studies, the American Marketing Association, the University Club of Chicago, and a number of other charitable, professional and social organizations.
Norman retired in 1998 and moved to Flat Rock, NC. Norman was a lifelong dog owner and basketball fan.
Norman was preceded in death by his father in 1991, mother in 1999, and wife, Helen, in 2000. Norman is survived by his 3 sons, Tod Carrier of Jacksonville, FL, David Carrier of Jacksonville, FL, and James Carrier of Darien, CT. Norman is survived by his brother, Ron Carrier of Athens, GA. Norman is also survived by seven grandchildren.
A visitation will be held at the Lawrence Funeral Home in, 2119 Post Rd., Darien, CT on Saturday February 17, 2024 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM. Norman will be buried next to his wife at Spring Grove Cemetery, in Darien, CT immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pet Animal Welfare Society of Connecticut (PAWS) , or to the Animal Welfare organization of the donor's choice.
