I never knew "James" Garnett, but my life was enhanced by knowing Jim or "Jimmy" Garnett in a number of environments. We were classmates and teammates in all three seasons throughout GCDS where Jimmy was a leader on the playing field and off. It was not happenstance that the positions he continued to play throughout his seasons at South Kent: quarterback, hockey goalie, and baseball pitcher demanded the leadership attributes that Jimmy brought to the playing field and rink. As a teammate and then an opponent, I can attest to his athletic abilities and sportsmanship (and determination). When I learned that we each had chosen Lake Forest College for our next step after graduation, I was delighted that we could continue our friendship. I was also delighted when he called me to ask if I would join him driving his VW Beetle halfway across the country to start our college years at LFC. As is often the case, I regret not keeping up with Jimmy over all these years, especially those times when I need a good laugh from a friend.

Summers on Cranberry Island, Jim used to generously take us whale watching on Moonshot. Those who have been, know what a special treat it is to catapult out Canadian waters at 50mph (and also what the fuel bill must be). The first time that Georgia, our youngest, was old enough to join us, we all arrived at the appointed time in the morning with our sandwiches and started to board. Georgia, then three or four, decided that she was too scared to go. We departed with some tears.
As siblings often do, her older brother and sister were quick to tell her what an incredible trip she had missed upon their return. More tears from little Georgia. She insisted that she was now ready and wanted to go whale watching. I said that we’d have to wait for Mr. Garnett to invite us to go another time.
Not many days later, Georgia secretly enlisted the help of our willing housekeeper Mary to track down Mr. Garnett. Trolling the island on the Gator, they soon flagged him down. Georgia told Jim that she was going whale watching and would he like to join her?
With his characteristic smile, he said that he would be delighted and she was soon close enough to touch those majestic creatures. Jim liked to call her “Captain Georgia” after that. The last time Georgia was on Moonshot, Jim let her “bring her in” to our horror, working the joy stick while Jim smiled and laughed.
Sometimes we never knew when Jim was joking. In the interest of keeping this short, I’ll just say that I’ve still got a bunch of boxes of the ammo you dropped off, Jim.
We will never forget Jim’s quick wit, his quiet dignity and devotion to his family and, above all, his incredible kindness to all.
May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
