Joan and I were neighbors in Darien. We both loved flowers and gardens, and she taught me the forgotten art of tea and sweets in the afternoon. She helped me during a difficult personal time, and our closeness allowed me to help her when she needed someone to drive her to the doctor.
She had a terrific sense of humor. My son, for a school project in 2008, was making a video with a classmate in our backyard. Typical good guy/bad guy plot, with my son being chased with a (plastic) gun. Our backyards face each other, so I called her to tell her it was make believe and not to be worried for my son. She said she'd turn her chair around and face my yard since it was more exciting than what she was reading!
We had not been in touch recently but my family has wonderful memories of a special, elegant lady. Rest in peace, lovely Joan.
