Obituary of William Flatley
William Flatley a 24-year resident of Darien, CT passed away suddenly on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 in San Diego, CA. Born in Chicago, IL, Bill was the son of the late William and Miriam Flatley and the brother of the late Terrence Flatley. He was 67 years old.
Bill graduated from Lewis University in Joliet, IL. He spent his successful career in Advertising Sales at Newsweek and Forbes. Bill joined Forbes in 1989 as the West Coast Manager of the magazine and after relocation to New York to become Advertising Director, was named Vice President of Worldwide Sales in 1996. He was instrumental in the launch of four critical Forbes ventures, leading the Sales teams and the creation of: Forbes.com, ForbesAutos.com, The Forbes Conference Group and Forbes Custom Media. From 2001 to 2006, Bill served as Vice President and Chief Advertising Officer of Forbes.com.
He was an active member of Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and a board member of the Online Publishers Association (OPA). He also served on the Advisory Boards of a number of internet start-ups and philanthropic boards. Bill served as an Elder at Noroton Presbyterian Church.
The greatest joy in Bill's life was his family. He was a devoted and loving husband, and together, he and his wife Beth, embraced and enjoyed their retired life traveling and maintaining good friendships. He could always be seen on the sidelines supporting his kids at their sporting events. Bill was loved and admired by his children and described as endlessly patient, always encouraging, and thoroughly adored. He loved boating, skiing and was an avid golfer and member of Woodway Country Club.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Beth, their children, Kelly, Kim and Chris, son-in laws Dan Klock and Chris Pepe, grand-children Campbell and George, his sister Suzanne Morphew and her husband James of Springfield IL, and many brother in-laws, sister in-laws, nieces and nephews.
Bill's Memorial will be held at 2pm on Friday October 24, at Noroton Presbyterian Church, 2011 Post Road, Darien.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Noroton Presbyterian Church, where Bill was a member for 24 years.
