Obituary of Elizabeth A. Hyland

Betty Hyland, formerly of Norwalk, CT died peacefully at home on July 11, 2011. She was 95. Born in New Haven, CT on February 16, 1916, Mrs. Hyland was the daughter of dairy owner John Augur and Anne Kenny Augur.
As the Drum Majorette, Betty led the St. Frances Bugle and Drum Corps between 1928-31 to many championships including Eastern State Champs and the Chicago World's Fair, performing regularly in the Yale Bowl. Betty was also a champion equestrian earning many medals in the 1920's and 1930's. She graduated from Georgetown Visitation Junior College in Washington, DC in 1936. Betty met and married Yale graduate, William (Bill) Hyland, of New Haven, CT in 1941. The couple was stationed at several air bases in the Deep South during WWII where Air Corps Major Hyland was a pilot instructor. Returning North after the War, they resided in Bronxville, NY where Betty worked as a bank teller and Bill commuted into NYC and later to his Nationwide Real Estate Development business based in Greenwich, CT. After the twins, Mark and Sharon, were born in 1951, they moved to Stamford, CT and later Riverside, CT until retirement to Boca Raton, FL. Betty has been living with her daughter for the past 4 years in Norwalk, CT. She was a member of Pro Christos in Riverside, Call-a-Ride in Greenwich, volunteered her services at Greenwich Hospital and charity organizations in Boca Raton, FL.
She was predeceased by her husband Bill in 2000, sister Doris Augur Casey of Bronxville, NY in 1982, brothers Millard in 1942 and Bill Augur in 1991of New Haven.
Betty is survived by her children Mark Hyland, his wife Diane, and daughter Sharon Hyland, all of Norwalk, CT. There will be a private service at a later date for family.
