Obituary of Kurt Allen Mesedahl

Long-time Darien resident, Kurt Allen Mesedahl, 58, passed away Saturday, July 9th, 2011 in his home after a courageous battle against cancer. His last days were filled with friends, family and loved ones, as he had been throughout his life. Born in Stamford, CT on January 13th, 1953, Kurt's family soon after moved to Darien. He graduated from Darien High School in 1970 and from the University of Michigan in 1974 with a Bachelors of Science in Water & Natural Resources. It was at Michigan that Kurt met and married his wife and best friend of 35 years, Valerie Stanton Mesedahl. Kurt spent many years as an environmental consultant and project manager for various firms such as York Research, US Filter and Veolia. In addition to his many years in Darien, Kurt's career afforded him opportunities to live in Huntington Beach, CA and Ellijay, GA, where he was never far from a body of water. He loved fishing, canoeing and time spent on the beach with friends and family. A talented craftsman and carpenter, Kurt lent his skills to many projects including his own property investments, to Valerie's real estate clients and to many neighbors and family members who came to rely on his uncanny ability to fix just about anything. Predeceased by his father, Ores Mesedahl, he is survived by his mother, Linda Mesedahl of Darien; his wife, Valerie Mesedahl of Darien; his daughters, Elise Mesedahl of Massachusetts and Erica Mesedahl of Michigan; his sisters, Linda (Bunny) Reiner of Florida and Nancy of Indiana, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 16th at 2:00PM at the First Congregational Church of Darien. A reception will be held at the church following the service. Donations to the Greenwich Hospital Hospice in Kurt's name would be greatly appreciated. Kurt was a true gentleman who will always be remembered for his integrity, thoughtfulness and sense of humor.
