Mary and I met when my daughter and I moved in the condo across the street from her. Mary always kept an eye on Katelyn and would call me to remind me that my garage door was open and every once in a while come over for tea. Id see her sitting on her front porch every day as long as the weather was good so she could watch the cars driving by, the kids on their bikes and the animals in the yard. She loved the flowers in my garden so I was happy to see her garden grow over the past year under Nadias patient care so she had beautiful flowers of her own to watch grow every day. She always liked our visits and listening to stories about Katelyns activities, trips and school. I was happy to see her eyes light up when we stopped by and looked forward to our next visit to hear more stories about Darien and her life there. Id watch her rake leaves and shovel her walk and was amazed at the endurance she had at her age. I would go over and ask her if she needed my help and she always told me no she was fine and didnt want me to hurt myself Believe me I was more afraid that she would fall or hurt herself than I was worried about me. I can only hope to be as strong and independent as she was. When she had her most recent, fall I was again amazed by her strength both physical and mental to overcome her injury. Even though she didnt acknowledge it all the time, I know she was happy to have the care and support she received. Shed say she liked being alone but I know she was happier having others there to talk to. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and a restful peace to Mary.

My father, Eward James Hodgett, son of James Hodgett, and Mary were first cousins. After my family moved to California in 1970, my father and mother, Ginny Hunt Hodgett, enjoyed yearly trips back to New York and Connecticut to visit family and take in the beauty of New England. A high light of their trip was always getting to see Mary. My Dad was always so impressed with Mary's independence, energy and that she was "sharp as a tack." At my Dad and sister's (Amy Hodgett) memorial service in April of 2010 in Bedford Hills New York, Mary's attendance was a bright spot for us all on that sad day. Our fond memories of Mary live on. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Randy, Susan and Gwen.

I worked with Mary for many years at the Burndy Corporation in Norwalk and developed an enduring friendship. She was a wonderful person and a great companion-a joy to be with. I'm sorry I missed seeing her in recent years but found the drive to Enfield stressful. Gwenny, Randy, and Jan - please accept my deepest condolences on your loss. You probably don't remember me, but I remember you as teenagers!

For 36 years, Mary was not only my mother-in-law, but also a friend. We spent a lot of time together between her visits to the west coast to avoid the eastern winters and our summer and fall visits east to see her and other family, and, finally, our visits to see how she was faring in her later years. She was often the Pozdena representative at my familys numerous celebrations when Randy was unavailable. Our sons and I spent memorable times with her on one beach or another, and we dragged her along on our various explorations both east and west. There was always something to chat about with Mary; she was a great walking partner into her 90s; she loved a good joke; and she was a very thoughtful and caring mother-in-law to me. I was glad to have been able to spend time with her in her later years and very fortunate to have been with her in her final days. She will be missed.

On behalf of the Hodgett family in Newry, Northern Ireland, I would like to extend deepest condolences to our cousins, Gwen and Randall Pozdena and all the family circle on the loss of their dear mother Mary Anita Johnston Pozdena. The Hodgett and Pozdena family links stretch across the Atlantic ocean to the birth place of Marys parents, the late James George Johnston (1876-1963) from Enniskillen, County Fermanagh and Mary Johnston, nee Hodgett, (1887-1983) from Dungannon, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, who immigrated to the USA c.1912 with Mary Hodgetts two brothers, James and Thomas Hodgett. It was with great joy that the Hodgetts in Newry recently welcomed cousin Gwen on a visit to Ireland and enjoyed a very special evening bursting full of laughter, banter and craic, in familiar family ease, regaling and exchanging shared history in stories and pictures. It was a wonderful family gathering which Gwen couldnt wait to return home to share with her mum the details of all their family connections in Ireland. Are thoughts and prayers are with the Pozdena family at this very sad time.

My mother, Mary Johnston Pozdena, outlived most of her contemporary friends and relatives, but was a faithful correspondent while she lived. She lived independently until the age of 97, doing her own shopping, cleaning and cooking. A fall and the associated effects limited her self-reliance thereafter. But she enjoy visits from neighbors, friends and family, and the company of caregivers who stayed with her around the clock. She enjoyed watching birds, squirrels and rabbits in her back yard, and the daily phone calls from family members. Mary was an example of pure, Yankee grit, surviving an accidental childhood arsenic poisoning, open heart surgery, surgery on a broken leg, and a variety of small ailments in her late 90s. I wish to especially thank her neighbors Ellen, Marlene, Barbara and Charlie, and Anne, and her caregivers Ela, Christina, Nadia, and Anna, who gave her the gentle care and good cooking that kept her going strong until the very end.
