Obituary of Mary Johnston Pozdena

Mary Johnston Pozdena, 99, of Enfield, CT, passed away on Tuesday, June 10, 2014. She was born in Darien, CT, on March 19, 1915, in the rectory of the Talmadge Hill Church. Her parents, the late James George Johnston and Mary Hodgett Johnston, were immigrants from Northern Ireland who lived and worked on the large estates of some of Darien's most famous residents. Notably, Mary grew up on the Rocklea estate at Pear Tree Point owned by the famous Irish tenor, John McCormack. Mary later lived on the LilyFarm, another McCormack property that later became the Ox Ridge Hunt Club. Mary graduated from Darien High School with the Class of 1933, and began a career in New York City. She married Milton O. Pozdena, a Columbia-trained pharmaceutical chemist and son of Dr. and Mrs. Otto R. Pozdena. They were married in New York on August 18, 1937, and resided in Westchester County during the war years. After having three children, Mary returned to Darien in 1956, where she worked for Burndy and Patient Care until her retirement. Mary was predeceased by her husband, her brother R. E. Leslie Johnston and her sister Florence Schram. Mary is survived by her children: Gwendolyn Pozdena of Westford MA; Randall Pozdena of Portland, OR; and Jan Pozdena of Estero, FL, as well as five grandchildren, and 1 great grandson. She was quietly laid to rest in Mather Cemetery in her beloved home town of Darien.
